December 07 Travel Log - Vienna (1)Winter is coming, the land of Scandinavia became sunless and freezing. The opening line of a story is always like this: It was a dark and stormy night...
One day after such a night is December 1st, and we began our trip to Vienna, Austria. We took the ryanair flight, the famous low fare flight in europe. We arrived on time, very lucky, eh. On our to the hostel, we happened to find that there is nothing to check the voucher for traffic, it is somewhere communism. Anyway, as civilized people from socialism country, we bought the tickets all our way. The Hostel Lauria located in an inconspicuous 100 years old building. It was out the check-in time when we arrived, and the keys are just left on the front door in a small envelope. The trust among people, so impressed. After a short break, we went on the way to the downtown Wien. The 'old town', or city center, is encircled by the 'Ring' road, which is also the location of many famous old buildings. Vienna has hosted the Habsburg court for centuries, from the Holy Roman Empire, then the capital of the Austrian Empire and later of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, and the Third Reich. It's a city famous for its history and also proud of music. It's the homeland of Johann Strauss, Franz Schubert and where Amadeus Mozart earned his great honor. However, I not good at either histoty or classic music, it's really a pity or waste. We walked along the Karnter Strase, the central mall in vienna. The street was decorated with kinds of lights, laser and projector, so beautiful and luxury. And there were several Swarovski on the street, the crystal bear is really lovely. Our wonderful night came to climax when we arrived at the St. Stephan's Cathedral. I don't know how to describe this impressive vision. Colourful lights projected on the gigantic building, gorgeous, spectral, mysterious and ghastgul. The first day ended with kabab. I loved it since wandering at Fudan, and it seems more delicious after such a long way.
October 07 Travel Log - HelsinkiIt's already two weeks since back from Finland, I am too busy to write the log in time...too lazy actually.
I met jiaqi at the harbour and was told that she didn't bring her passport, and she just considered it as a suburban trip, faint. Anyway, it's lucky enough that we got on board without trouble. Acutually, it's just like a domestic trip, only using different currency. We got on the deck and were impressed by the beautiful view of the Slussen Harbour and later archipelago on Baltic Sea. As the night came, it became convival in the ship, people gathered at pubs, buffets, ballroom and casino. I was shocked that most people throwing bucks on blackjack and roulette are yellow faces and speaking chinese. I also tried my luck on a slot machine but no miracle happened. In the tax-free shop, jiaqi was so exciting at the cosmetic and perfumes, and introduced the various brands to me, totally no idea, so I turned to the chocolates and wines.
We arrived at Helsinki in the morning of 19th. It's a bit rainy, but did no matter. The First stop is the Upenski Cathedral, the largest orthodox church in Western Europe. It's built and decorated in russian style, and had a plaque commemorating Russian Emperor Alexander II. And the next stop is the Helsinki Cathedral. It's in a neoclassical style and the climax of the whole Senate Square. It's also a tribute to the Tsar of Russia and the Grand Duchy of Finland. After visting the National Museum of Finland, I got to know the history of finland was just dominated by either Sweden or Russia, so it left a combination of two cultures and art style. There are many excellent art or design museums at Helsinki, but unfortunately I had no time to visit.
Then we came the Temppeliaukio Church, the site gave me the deepest impression in this trip. The churh is not as noticeable as Upenski or Helsinki Catherdral, it is built semi-underground. The interior was excavated and built into the rock, but is bathed in natural light entering through the glazed dome. And the interior acoustic quality is excellent by the rough, virtually unworked, rock surfaces. It's really a genius masterpiece.
The sky became clear in the noon, and we walked along the Mannerheimintie Avenue. Helsinki is a small city and most of the important buildings and visiting sites are on the sides of this avenue. One of them looks exactly the same as Great Hall of the People, hehe. After a few walk, we got to the Sibeliu Park for the monument of the world-famous composer Jean Sibelius. This unique work of art resembled organ pipes, welded together from 600 pipes and weighing over 24 metric tons. It’s said that melody would come out when wind blows, but I heard nothing. And there is a lake near the park, waking on the macadam of the lakeside and enjoying the beautiful views, it was fantastic. On the way back to the harbour, we dropped by the Cathedral again, it looked more beautiful under the blue sky and I tooked some more pictures.
It was still some time when arriving the harbour. So we had a salmon soup on the market square and fed the pigeons with biscuits. It was so relaxed after a whole day walking, and I just realized it might be very tired for a girl, sorry to jiaqi. After all, it’s a very nice trip, and very cheap. The only pity was that I hadn’t got a chance to enjoy the famous finnish sauna!
September 21 About "Travel Log"After travelling to Finland, I decide try to write down every spot I visit from now on, and in English. I hope I can insist on it. Finished the first note about Uppsala, I am happy feeling like I traveled once again there. Cheer.,
Btw, photos in msn sapces are too small, is there any better space? Travel Log - UppsalaUppsala is a smal town in the north of stockholm, as well as the fourth largest city of sweden. September 8th is the Kulturnatten (culture night) this year, and I took a one day visit to this small town. Several of my friends are studying at Uppsala University, the oldest university in Scandinavia founded in 1477. Simmie offered me a nice lunch and gave me some guide. And I met an interesting guy from Beijing University on my way. The first step is the Domkyrka (Uppsala Cathedral), the largest church in northern Europe. The church was built in Gothic style, and the highest building in the city. Inside the church is very impressive, the stained glass window depicting bible stories, fine decorated baroque pulpit, and many chambers each having marvellous monuments, statutes or paintings at the perimeter of the church. Facing opposite the cathedral is the Museum Gustavianum, the former main building of the university, named after King Gustav Adolphus. Now it is a museum exhibiting collections of Classical, Egyptian and Nordic antiquities. Some actors with periwig performed some experiments or speeches as scientists or politician to show the history of science and society to the children. Then I walked to the Carl Linnaeus Garden, a small symmetric garden with kinds of plants. Carl Linnaeus, a renowned naturalist, established the modern scheme of binomial nomenclature, which should be familar to biology student. And this year is the 300 anniversay for his birth. Walking in his beautiful garden and house, I realized again that bioligy is the subject for richs, who had both wealth and leisure. People who are still struggling for life, such as me, is not suitable for this so-called "science". Out of the garden, I lost my way and strolled in the city reaching the center square. Some people were putting up stages for the evening performance. Soon I got my direction and led to the Uppsala castle on the samll hill, passed by the old town hall, bibliotech (library) and Gamla torget (old square). The castle is built on the highest point of Uppsala, by King Gustav Vasa, from where can take a full view of the city. It is not as grand or gorgeous as I thought, but it has a beautiful botanical garden besides it. It is said that traveling in Europe is to see the churchs and castles. Well, it's true, but I think they are not comparable for the majesty or magnificence with the temples and palaces in Asia. The culture night is held annually in Uppsala, it might be the biggest festival here. Almost everyone come to the streets and show themselves. Music from various bands, dance from various nationality, and any one is free to join and enjoy. This old small town was ebullient at this time. Even the castle and library open till midnight. Children chorus sang the ode in the cathedral, feeling elegant and saint, though I know little about catholic. I took the train back to stockholm at half past nine. It's pity that I missed many wonderful show and the crazy "Uppsala screaming". Just leave it for the next visit.
