September 21 About "Travel Log"After travelling to Finland, I decide try to write down every spot I visit from now on, and in English. I hope I can insist on it. Finished the first note about Uppsala, I am happy feeling like I traveled once again there. Cheer.,
Btw, photos in msn sapces are too small, is there any better space? Travel Log - UppsalaUppsala is a smal town in the north of stockholm, as well as the fourth largest city of sweden. September 8th is the Kulturnatten (culture night) this year, and I took a one day visit to this small town. Several of my friends are studying at Uppsala University, the oldest university in Scandinavia founded in 1477. Simmie offered me a nice lunch and gave me some guide. And I met an interesting guy from Beijing University on my way. The first step is the Domkyrka (Uppsala Cathedral), the largest church in northern Europe. The church was built in Gothic style, and the highest building in the city. Inside the church is very impressive, the stained glass window depicting bible stories, fine decorated baroque pulpit, and many chambers each having marvellous monuments, statutes or paintings at the perimeter of the church. Facing opposite the cathedral is the Museum Gustavianum, the former main building of the university, named after King Gustav Adolphus. Now it is a museum exhibiting collections of Classical, Egyptian and Nordic antiquities. Some actors with periwig performed some experiments or speeches as scientists or politician to show the history of science and society to the children. Then I walked to the Carl Linnaeus Garden, a small symmetric garden with kinds of plants. Carl Linnaeus, a renowned naturalist, established the modern scheme of binomial nomenclature, which should be familar to biology student. And this year is the 300 anniversay for his birth. Walking in his beautiful garden and house, I realized again that bioligy is the subject for richs, who had both wealth and leisure. People who are still struggling for life, such as me, is not suitable for this so-called "science". Out of the garden, I lost my way and strolled in the city reaching the center square. Some people were putting up stages for the evening performance. Soon I got my direction and led to the Uppsala castle on the samll hill, passed by the old town hall, bibliotech (library) and Gamla torget (old square). The castle is built on the highest point of Uppsala, by King Gustav Vasa, from where can take a full view of the city. It is not as grand or gorgeous as I thought, but it has a beautiful botanical garden besides it. It is said that traveling in Europe is to see the churchs and castles. Well, it's true, but I think they are not comparable for the majesty or magnificence with the temples and palaces in Asia. The culture night is held annually in Uppsala, it might be the biggest festival here. Almost everyone come to the streets and show themselves. Music from various bands, dance from various nationality, and any one is free to join and enjoy. This old small town was ebullient at this time. Even the castle and library open till midnight. Children chorus sang the ode in the cathedral, feeling elegant and saint, though I know little about catholic. I took the train back to stockholm at half past nine. It's pity that I missed many wonderful show and the crazy "Uppsala screaming". Just leave it for the next visit.
